How to name your own hull statuses
Optional. Off by default — turn on Boat statuses under Settings → Advanced → Modules. Until then every hull is Available, In maintenance, or Retired, same as before.
Most software gives you a status list and tells you to live with it. Your crew doesn't say "maintenance". They say "winterized", "needs gelcoat", "waiting on a yoke". This lets you use those words without confusing the Grid.
How it works
Every status you add sits under one of three effects — the only thing the engine reads:

Each effect has one default — the label a hull gets when the app only knows the effect (a damaged return goes on hold under your default hold label, for example). You can rename the defaults but not delete them.
Set up your list
- Open Settings → What you offer → Boat statuses (admins only).
- Under the effect it belongs to, click Add a … status and type the name. Pick a colour if you want it to stand out on Fleet.
- Make default if this should be the label the app falls back to for that effect.
- Save statuses. The chips on Fleet update right away.
Renaming a status changes the chip on every hull that has it; timeline entries keep the label they were written with. Removing one is fine — hulls that had it fall back to the default for their effect. If you'd rather keep it for history but stop offering it, tick Hide from pickers.
Use it on a hull
- Open Fleet. The Status column shows each hull's label as a chip.
- Pick a new status from the drop-down in the row. Moving a hull from bookable to on hold or out asks you to confirm — it won't be offered for new bookings after that.
- A hull with an active or upcoming booking can't go on hold or out. Reassign those bookings first, then change the status.
- Open the hull (click its code) for the timeline. Every status change lands there with the label and, when you're on the hull page, the meters: rented days, trips, rented days since the last repair, and the last return condition.
Out-of-the-fleet statuses are for admins, like Retire was.
Rules can read it
Settings → Booking rules → Assignment rules has hull status as a built-in field. So a rule can say: when the booking's VIP is not yes and hull status is Demo unit, don't recommend that boat. The rule compares the label you see, so if you rename a status, update the rule too.
Limits, honestly
- Statuses are per hull, not per boat type or piece of gear.
- No automatic status changes yet — "40 rented days since service → put it on hold" is on the list, not in the app.
- The Grid and online booking still only know bookable vs not. Your labels show on Fleet, the hull page, and in rules.
- Turning the module off goes back to plain Available / Maintenance / Retired on Fleet. Your list is kept and comes back when you turn it on again.
